Spring Break Trip to Port Aransas, TX

We just got back from our spring break trip to Port Aransas, Texas. My family and I had a great time. The weather was nice mid 70's with 10mph wind partly cloudy most of the time. The beach was excellent as usual clear water warming to mid to high 60's. Tried out some surf fishing but no catches. My son and I did get to fish along the channel off 361 (Cemetary road) Click here for location just south of Morris Cummings Cut. We arrived just before noon and the fish bite was off. However we did observe many boats along the channel that had nice stringers of reds. We tried live shrimp on a popping cork, also tried bottom rigs and even broke out the johnson gold spoon, still no bites.  Oh well that's why it's called fishing and not catching. Here are a few pics from the trip, enjoy.

Current Fishing Reports 1-15-11

All current fishing reports read about the same as follows: According to Capt. Kevin McCoy

Trout and reds are being taken with amazing consistency. Trout are hitting soft plastics and wading has been the most productive. There are trout in the sand holes in the flats and they are also along shell edges in the flats. Trout are also being taken in bays that have shell reefs and seem to be on the deeper edges where the shell meets the mud. Plum/Chartreuse has been an excellent producer. Reds are being taken on lures, mullet, and shrimp (if you can find it). The best bite has been on a really low tide fishing the first drop off to deeper water. Limits are not uncommon. If you have a high tide catching red fish can be a bit more tricky.
Good luck and visit Capt Kelly http://www.reelmccoyguideservice.com/  online he can put you on the fish.

Best place to land Redfish in January

It's winter time again and the the fish are on their normal winter pattern and they are hanging in the usual spots. Most of the fish caught are in shallow water next to drop offs. Usually this time of the year they will stage in the deeper water at night and move up shallow when the sun warms the water. Just about any bait you want to throw has been working including soft plastics, but the most productive bait has been mullet. Trout fishing has also improved considerably while wade fishing the sharp breaks, mud/grass and scattered shell bottoms while throwing soft plastics. Topwaters have been productive when we have some strong incoming tides and nervous mullet. Live shrimp has been producing trout when fished under a popping cork over the reefs up in our northern territory. January at Oil Field Channels GPS 27' 46.52'LAT / 97' 8.22' LON have been an Excellent month for Speck's and Good for Red's check it out and let me know how it was please comment.
